MANITOBA OSTOMY PROGRAM (MOP)
The Manitoba Ostomy Program (MOP) is a unique program that provides nursing support and ostomy supply coverage for all Manitoba residents living with ostomies, wounds or fistulae that require pouching. The Manitoba Ostomy Program is staffed by baccalaureate-prepared nurses who pursue additional education to become a Nurse Specialized in Wound, Ostomy, and Continence care (NSWOC). The Manitoba Ostomy Program works in collaboration with the NSWOC nurses from the Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface Hospital, and together, provide support for over 3400 persons registered in the program.
NSWOC services in Manitoba include:
- Pre-operative patient teaching
- Pre-operative ostomy site marking
- Post-operative patient teaching
- Ongoing stoma care support via:
- Ostomy clinic stoma assessments (by appointment only)
- Rural clinic opportunities throughout the year
- Telehealth appointments booked as needed
- Telephone support for ongoing support and advice
- Virtual appointments via Zoom, Facetime, Microsoft teams ***NEW FOR 2020***
To be eligible for registration with MOP, one must be a resident of Manitoba, living with an ostomy, wound or fistula which requires pouching, and have an active nine-digit Personal Health Identification Number (PHIN) for coverage through Manitoba Health. After surgery, an NSWOC will be consulted to assess the client in the hospital for teaching and registration with MOP. If the client has had surgery in a rural hospital, the surgical unit will ensure that client is registered with the Manitoba Ostomy Program before discharge from the hospital. Clients who have had surgery out of province may call MOP directly for program registration. A doctor’s referral is not required.
The MOP has locations in Winnipeg and Brandon to serve the province of Manitoba. The Winnipeg location provides follow-up care for patients who have had surgery at the community hospitals in Winnipeg and other regions of Manitoba. The Brandon location provides follow-up care for patients who live in Brandon and surrounding Prairie Mountain Health Region. Clinic assessments are booked by appointment.
